The figure of Santa Claus has assumed many forms over the centuries. As Saint Nicholas in fourth century Byzantine Turkey he was depicted wearing bishop’s robes. In Britain, as far back as the 17th century, he was said to wear a long, green robe. But rarely has he been shown wreathed in hellish flames and emitting gigantic plumes of noxious, stygian smoke.
