I’m a little perplexed by the new seasonal offering from the sweet-toothed Thorntons. We open on a group of charming young carol singers entertaining another group of parents and children. Suddenly, as we cut from one group to the other, we see that the most rotund parent has been replaced by a leering snowman. Interesting.

OK, back to the action and…a reindeer has now appeared in place of one of the other parents. Mmm. So there’s obviously some sort of magical Christmas transformation taking place. I’m intrigued. The joyous bonhomie suddenly stalls as a rather world-weary young singer signals his disillusionment at proceedings by whispering “whatever” under his breath. Charming child! And…what the Devil! There’s now…yes, it’s an ostrich!

Back to the song and, to cheer up his cynical colleague, a young boy produces a rather deflated looking piece of Thornton’s chocolate. This quickly does the trick and inspires our previously reluctant caroller into a final glorious verse. The ad concludes with the ostrich now sporting a Christmas hat and the message that ‘we can all believe’.

Haven’t a clue what it’s all about. But it’ll certainly stand out among the glut of celebrities rampaging around with supermarket trolleys. So does it matter if I don’t get it? Is there anything to get? Discuss over a sausage roll and a glass of fizzy.

You’re a dynamic, cutting edge cable news channel in Alabama. You have a great idea: why not link your live Twitter feed to your billboard? What better way to communicate the fact that the first place to get the news, as it happens, is via your channel. Cue one very unfortunate coincidence and a passing motorist with a camera-phone.
